How to have FRIZZ-FREE curly hair: all natural, homemade shampoo

I have curly hair, and when I was little it looked so cute. But now, it is ALWAYS frizzy and no hair gel, mousse, oil, cream, or shampoo/conditioner has EVER tamed it. Lush conditioner worked somewhat, but it is expensive and I always used a lot of it. So, I was ecstatic when I found a recipe for homemade shampoo on this blog.

This shampoo I found by pure accident. I have been trying to lead a zero waste lifestyle (for info on that, read through this blog and this blog), and I wanted to make my own shampoo in order to stop buying plastic bottles of shampoo. I was looking for a general shampoo recipe, but I found the holy grail for frizzy hair instead!

The recipe is great for dry, curly, frizzy hair. I doubt this will work if your hair isn’t dry or curly. It did not work for my boyfriend, it just made his hair greasy, which I think is because his hair is short and not dry or frizzy at all.

DISCLAIMERS:

  • The shampoo doesn’t lather like store-bought shampoo, nor is it as thick. It also has to stay refrigerated, or it will go bad. So, what I do is keep it in the fridge and then pour myself enough for one use into a small container and then go shower. It does take some getting used to, I used to keep forgetting to get my shampoo and would remember once I was already in the shower.
  • Make sure you don’t use too much, it may make your hair greasy (hasn’t happened to me)

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT:

  • I don’t use conditioner anymore, my hair is tangle free using this shampoo.
  • I add tea tree essential oil to help with dry, itchy scalp (and dandruff), and I haven’t had an itchy scalp since using it.
  • I don’t use ANY product in my hair anymore! This is a miracle if you have curly, frizzy hair. If it’s a particularly humid day and my hair does frizz up a bit, I use a mixture of castor oil and argan oil (but not too much or hair will look greasy).

I have tweaked the recipe that I found,  after I made it and tried it.

So here is what I use:

  • 1.5 cups distilled water (or boiled and cooled)
  • One 400mL can coconut milk
  • 2 teaspoons honey (optional-but I think it helps with not going bad)
  • 1 teaspoon vitamin e oil (optional-but I think it helps with not going bad)
  • 1/3 cup castile soap (or less, depending on your lather preference)
  • 10-20 drops tea tree oil (optional-keep shampoo in a glass bottle if you do use it, essential oil eats away at plastic)

Put all the ingredients in your container (the castile soap goes in last so it doesn’t bubble up too much), and shake! Also, shake before each use.

I use about 3-4 tablespoons of shampoo per wash and my hair is shoulder length. This usually lasts about 3 months for me, kept in the fridge it has never gone bad.

The Trials & Tribulations of Baking a Buttermilk Pie

A few days ago, I baked a buttermilk pie from this book https://www.amazon.com/Bake-Good-Things-Williams-Sonoma-Techniques/dp/1616287675.

I think the end product came out very tasty; HOWEVER, boy did I have trouble with the filling.

The filling is made with a basic butter, sugar, flour, and buttermilk custard. I creamed the room temperature butter and sugar for about 5 minutes, added in 3 eggs VERY SLOWLY (really, very, very, very, slowly), and everything was going great. The SECOND I started to mix in the flour, my mixture curdled. AND I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY!!! When I added the buttermilk, it was too late. My mixture curdled, hard. I can’t express my despair enough. All my ingredients were at room temperature, I mixed in my eggs one at a time, I followed all the tips I found online to not have my mixture curdle. And it still happened. I’ve seen other recipes use melted butter, and I’m wondering if I should try that.

Anyways, I baked my pie with the curdled mixture and it came out great anyways; the filling had a great texture. Some recipes even said that curdling is fine. But, I’ve seen videos on Youtube of people making this pie and their mixture doesn’t curdle, and I want to know why.

So, if anyone has any tips, please let me know!

Manhattan.

So if you watch the show Manhattan (on WGN America) and you enjoy it, then you are also very excited that it got renewed for a second season and is returning next year! If you didn’t watch the first season, I highly urge you to! It is about the race to build the first atomic bomb for WWII in 1943, and is set in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The show is so intelligent and dramatic, the characters are spectacular, and the directing is nothing short of perfect. It is a bit slow to start off, but after the third episode I was hooked. It is based on the Manhattan Project but most of the characters are fictional and it is not historically accurate (although obviously some things did occur in real life).

The reason I started watching this show is because its director also worked on The West Wing, which is my absolute favorite show of all time. And, boy, am I glad I started watching. But, what made me write this post was the season finale. It was beautiful. I can’t even say it was more dramatic than the rest of the episodes because they are all jam packed with drama, but it was certainly different. My favorite part was the last 5 minutes. It was so beautifully shot and the song that played throughout gave me chills. So, here is the song! It is called Future Primitive and it is by the band Papercuts.

Also, please comment if you watch the show and what you thought of the season finale, and if you loved the ending/this song as much as I did!

Now, on to the snacks!

1. Cinnamon grahams by Skeeter Nut Free

These are so good! They are super cinnamon-y but not too sweet, and super crunchy.  It was a good size baggie too.

2. Lollipops by Yumearth

These are soooo yummy and come in awesome flavors like pomegranate prude (my favorite). Does it help that they’re organic? Yes!

3. Montreal steak spice seasoning potato chips by covered bridge

I was not too crazy about these. They weren’t that good, just tasted like steak seasoning, which is weird not on steak.

4. Pineapple + coconut fruit ice by Smooze!

This is so awesome! I haven’t had one of these since I was a kid. This is a fruit popsicle thingy, so it’s dairy-free. I have yet to try it but I like pineapple and coconut so why wouldn’t I like it, right?

5. Salty peanut salt water taffy by salty road

I haven’t tried this yet…but sounds weird? Maybe it will surprise me and I will like it.

6. Salty caramel apple salt water taffy by salty road

Another one.

7. Crispy cheddar crackers by back to nature

Can’t wait to eat these. Healthy version of cheez-its? Yes, please!

8. Kettle sweet peanuts by Love with Food

These I wasn’t crazy about either. I ate them, buuuuuut not super tasty, although not bad either. I just think kettle corn taste belongs on popcorn.

9. Nutty rice bites with blueberries by 180 Snacks

This was my favorite from the box. Absolutely delicious, even though they are rice crackers! They have nuts and seeds and berries and so much tastier than plain rice crackers. I cannot express enough how much I loved these. The only bad thing is that the baggie is too small. I could eat an endless amount!!! I want to buy these but they’re not sold on the love with food website. Get your stuff together Love with Food!

What I love about this, is that they send you a little info pamphlet about the snacks with the ingredients listed there, and It’s so nice to see so few ingredients! It also says what snacks are vegan, gluten-free, organic, or non-GMO.

If you want to sign up then click here { http://lovewithfood.com/invite?m=r&ref=UBh } and you will get your first box free!

July Beauty Box 5 (my first ever!)

This month I received my first Beauty Box 5 and I’m pretty happy with what I got. The gist of it: you pay $12 a month and you receive 5 sample or full size items. You can google it. Here it is!

1. H20 Plus Bath Aquatics Shampoo (sample size)

I’m pretty happy with this because I will be traveling next week and I’ll get to try this out! “For fine hair, fly-aways, or sensitive scalps.” A plus: cruelty free.

2. Body Drench  Grape Candy Licious Lips (full size)

Not too crazy about the smell, but it feels nice on the lips. It is a super skinny stick so I’ll probs be taking this on vacation too.

3. Nika K New York Nail Color (full size)

Eh, about this. It’s a nice red color. I will be trying it on my toesies tomorrow. I mean, it’s just nail polish what do you want, right?

4, HASK Argan Oil Intense Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment (full size)

This I am really excited about. It is a pouch which is supposedly for two treatments but I am definitely going to squeeze more out of it because it is a fair amount and I don’t have a lot of hair.

5.  Revlon Bold Lacquer Mascara in Blackest Black (full size)

This would have been nicer if I didn’t already have enough mascara. I like that it is full size, this alone has a retail value of $7.99. I’ll be giving this to my mom though as I already have enough.

Overall first impressions: Nice! But not AMAZING. It’s cool to be surprised with beauty gifts though. I’m pretty much in it for the surprises. It was a good first impression though, hopefully next months will be better!

Sprint is the worst, sleaziest, scammiest phone company! (you guys need to read this!)

So this past weekend I got a new phone and I had the absolute WORST experience at a Sprint store and I want to make it known so that others are aware of how shitty they are. Here’s what happened:

They flat out LIED about when my 2 year contract was up and when I could upgrade to a new phone. Be on the lookout for this. Keep track of when you bought your phone because they will lie to you. My dad called customer service AND a sprint store, and they both said I wasn’t eligible for an upgrade until October. So I went to Best Buy with my mom to upgrade her phone only. Whilst there, the guy helping us tells me I can upgrade my phone too. Excuse me, WHAT?! I was told I couldn’t by two different Sprint people….The guy then tells me that phone companies lie to customers a lot about when upgrades are available. They usually say you can upgrade NOW if you get this new plan OTHERWISE you can’t upgrade until later. I mean, seriously?! That is not cool.

I also had a terrible experience at the actual Sprint store. They are super pushy about getting you to change your plan so that they get the most commission they can. When I told them we didn’t want to change plans, they bugged me asking, why not why not?? Then, when I kept saying no, they made up some bullshit excuse about having to call my dad to try and sell him the plan change since he is the primary account holder EVEN THOUGH, my mom was there and she is also an account holder. I asked them why they had to call if my mom was there and they said, “oh, it’s a financial decision so I have to call.” My dad didn’t answer and they still let me keep my plan, so that was bullshit.

Moral of the story: DO NOT GO TO SPRINT, go to Best Buy. Best Buy employees don’t get paid commission so they don’t push you to buy anything, and they are usually super helpful (at least the times I’ve been…I’ve yet to have a negative experience).

New Lush I’ve received!

So, tomorrow is my birthday (yay!) and I received a few lush items as gifts. I love lush, they make it so easy to find products not tested on animals that actually work well and are worth the money. Anyway, I loved everything I received and I want to share with everyone in case you’re wondering whether you should go Lush or not.

My favorite item I received is the Sea Spray hair mist. I have curly, frizzy hair and the only way to keep it from frizzing up is by using mousse. But this spray actually has some hold to it (contains some gel) and my hair did not get frizzy ONE BIT. It is suppose to give you some volume, which I was worried about because of the frizz, BUT it made my hair more voluminous WITHOUT making it frizzy. I’ve never had this happen. My curls stayed in tact all day and my hair smelled absolutely amazing all day long. I love it! ($12ish)

Next, the Mint Julep lip scrub, their “cocktail lip scrub”. This made my lips super soft, and I simply licked it off once I finished scrubbing. Make sure to use lip balm afterwards, otherwise your lips might dry out. I’m only going to use this a few times a week. ($10)

Lastly, I received the Peppermint massage bar. This works perfect for massages because a couple of glides on the skin and you have enough to work with. It smells amazing and the mint is great for sore muscles (like all natural icy hot). Dealing with sore muscles is basically the story of my life so this is perfect for me. ($11)

That’s it! Thanks for reading:) I suggest you buy all of these because they last a while, are worth the money, and work GREAT.
